ROMANS 5:5
My Journey

My life changed forever on a retreat where God’s mercy met me in the confessional. The Holy Spirit ignited my heart, leading me to surrender my college dreams and serve as a missionary with the National Evangelization Teams in St. Paul, Minnesota, for two years.
Those early days of ministry sparked an adventure that’s still unfolding.
I’m a man on fire for God’s mission, shaped by a life of service and unshakable faith. After earning my degree from Franciscan University, I spent 14 years as a youth minister in Texas, Colorado, and North Carolina. Walking with teens through divorce, addiction, and loss, I saw God’s love ignite hope in their hearts time and again.

In 2003, I returned to Franciscan University, leading youth conferences across the U.S. and Canada as Director of Youth Outreach for a decade, then serving 11 years as Director of Evangelization and Formation. I also taught youth ministry as an adjunct professor, pouring my heart into equipping others to share the Gospel.

Life hasn’t been easy. Over the past 12 years, I faced my parents' deaths, my wife’s brave fight with cancer, and my son’s near-fatal car accident and miraculous healing. Through every storm, God’s promise in Romans 8:38-39 burned bright: nothing can separate us from His love. That truth fuels me.

In 2024, I heard God’s call to step out in faith as a full-time missionary evangelist. I’ve preached to over 100,000 souls across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and I’m hungry to reach more with the life-changing message of Christ’s love. Please pray for me, my family, and this mission as I follow where God leads.

I live in Steubenville, Ohio, with my incredible wife of 35 years, Lisa, and we’re blessed with five amazing kids and sons-in-law—Andrew; Madeleine and Will; Catherine and Grant; JohnPaul; and Thérèse—plus our joyful two-year-old granddaughter, Rita Joy. When I’m not preaching, you’ll find me strumming my guitar, cheering for the Pittsburgh Penguins, or shouting “Go Blue!” for Michigan football.
Fr. Mike Schmitz, Bible in a Year
Every time I hear John speak, I am drawn more and more into the Mystery of Christ and the life of the disciple.
John led our annual retreat for youth ministers in a way that not only communicated to each of them that he has “been there” but also that he cares for their souls, for their families, and for their ministries.
His insight into the life of Christ and the life of the disciple of Christ is still felt throughout our diocese.
